Educating individuals to recognize and add value to their personal potential is undoubtedly the core of Paedagogy: a complex and fascinating system continually enriched by new experiments. These experiments are aimed at providing more and more correct answers to human beings’ real learning needs, in relation to their psycho-physical condition, age and experiences. In addition to traditional paedagogical disciplines, experimental disciplines have widened students’ knowledge. Studies in the psychological and paedagogical field have shown that it is absolutely necessary to ensure  the individual’s  thorough and harmonious psycho-physical development  by respecting their psychophysical unity and favouring its full manifestation.

This is called "self-actualization" in psychology : each individual needs to  actualize their potential. American psychologist Abraham Maslow gives this definition of self-actualization: "What one can be, one must be. One must be like one’s nature wants one. This is the need for what we can call self-actualization".

Helping students to "re-discover" their  potential is the educator’s main task, along with adopting the most effective methodology. Teachers should also stimulate  their students’ awareness, let them " know that they can". This methodology is called "empowerment" in psychology, from the verb "to em-power" which means "to give power, enable someone to act". Empowerment is about enhancing people’s awareness of the fact that they can decide and influence reality, increasing the sense of self-worth and reducing mistrust and helplessness. These are the foundations of this project, which proposes that Mastering Power should be taught in schools. Mastering Power is a new system aimed at  developing balanced and effective individuals, with a view to their future as adults.

Mastering Power as an educational tool: - objectives- The contribution of Oriental arts


In man there is an innate need for progress, emancipation, knowledge. This need, which is already evident in early childhood, tends to be subject to alternate phases, where excessive aggression, fear or lack of self-esteem can creep in, thus compromising the correct development of personality, sometimes irreversibly. To avoid this, it is necessary for young people in this delicate phase of development to be supported by a guide who should orient the young person towards solid values and self-confidence.

This is the "power" that Mastering Power Light is intended to promote; its educational principles are deeply rooted in Martial Arts.

The educational value of Oriental disciplines is by now undoubted. If we refer to values like Self-Realization and Em-powerment, this is what the teachings of Martial Arts like Kung Fu are about. Self-worth, balance and inner calmness leading to self-control, unity of body and mind, of man and the universe, are the values that Buddhist and Taoist Schools have pursued for thousands of years. Western psychotherapy and educational science have acknowledged the importance of creating inner states of well-being and trust for a correct development process, in which students can develop their sense of integrity. Every teaching should certainly be made accessible to students and adapted to their unique personalities. Children and young people can be trained in certain pshycho-physical qualities if their guide can teach them in a professional and paedagogically correct way, avoiding the use of useless or misleading concepts or terminology. We should remember that Mastering Power Light is a practical training method and not just a meditative discipline.

Practising Mastering Power Light is aimed at developing practitioners' attention, presence and perseverance in achieving their goals. These behavioural characteristics are extremely useful to individuals on all levels of development. The body and mind are trained in absolute unity and awareness, so as to allow the students to feel confidence, energy and gratification growing in them.

Practical contents  The Mastering Power course consists of two sectors:  - theoretical and experiential- Physical and technical


Theoretical and experiential sector - syllabus:

Identification of each students' main personality traits

Use of the main concentration and relaxation techniques from Qi Gong and Tai Chi Ch'uan

Analysis of behavioural mechanisms triggered by situations of high psycho-physical stress (mistrust, helplessness, panic and rage) -Specific references to woman abuse - Study of the psychological abilities acquired by a Mastering Power practitioner (attention, calmness, cool-headedness, decision, precision) - elements of human anatomy and physiology necessary to practise Mastering Power - analysis of typical Self-Defence situations - learning of the main Mastering Power psycho-physical abilities (deftness, simplicity, speed) - correct use of the voice in high risk situations; techniques for using the power of the voice (Kiai) - Self-Defence related laws

 Physical and tecnical sector - syllabus: - developing the necessary physical condition for Mastering Power Light- Defence and falling techniques - specific techniques for women


Typical lesson   A typical Mastering Power Light lesson will last a hour and a half, during which the theoretical and experiential sector and the technical one are treated in an extremely fluid manner, responding to the practitioners' needs.


Introductory and theoretical phase:


Lesson presentation (10 minutes) - Experiential phase (30 minutes) - exercises for relaxation and inner concentration: Qi Gong Three line relaxation method and energy toning -


Physical and technical phase (40 minutes):


Mastering Power muscle and joint warm-up, Falling techniques exercises (necessary to avoid joint traumas), upper limb strengthening for Mastering Power practice - mobilization of the spine and pelvis - falling techniques (simulation), cooldown and stretching
